Occupational Therapy

Helping you achieve more each day

Occupational therapists help people perform everyday tasks and skills needed for work, school and/or home.

When children or adults are having trouble performing daily tasks because of injury, aging, developmental delay or any other condition, an occupational therapist can help.

Occupational therapists work with families and carers to help the individual achieve confidence and independence.

Therapy may include equipment, an assessment of the home and school environment to decide if any changes can be made to make daily activities easier or safer, identifying techniques to increase independence and improve well being.

How does occupational therapy help children?

There are many reasons children might need extra help with daily tasks. Our paediatric occupational therapist can assist children who have difficulty with:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Gross motor skills
  • Sensory processing skills
  • Handwriting and drawing skills
  • Self care skills
  • Play skills

An occupational therapist will work with your child to develop skills through targeted therapies and support services such as:

  • Setting goals and helping develop confidence and independence
  • Providing advice to home carers, kindergarten, childcare and schools
  • Providing home, kinder and school programs
  • Recommending therapy groups or individual therapy programs

How does occupational therapy help Adults?

Occupational therapy aims to help adults achieve greater independence in day to day activities.  Read Jill's Story. This might include:

  • Showering and personal care activities
  • Using steps
  • Household activities
  • Getting out and about in their local area
  • Participating in work and hobbies
An occupational therapist can help adults to maximise independence and safety:

  • Assessing safety issues and possible trip hazards in the home
  • Suggesting different ways for doing everyday activities
  • Recommending aids and equipment
  • Advising and assisting with modifications to the home
  • Providing education and training to clients and carers
  • Referring to other services
  • Applying to funding schemes for equipment and home modifications

Who is eligible?

  • Pre-primary and school aged children
  • Adults aged over 65 or younger adults with disabilities
