  • What if I need a specialist?

When specialist care is needed, you may be asked to visit the specialist services available at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne (RDHM).

Due to the long waiting lists at RDHM you can choose to see a private specialist.

Who is eligible?

  • Any child under the age of 13
  • Youth aged 13-18 years eligible for the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule, or have a Health Care or Pension Card
  • People under 18 years of age who are a youth justice client in custodial care, or in out-of-home care provided by DHS
  • Adults who hold a Health Care or Pension Card
  • All refugees and asylum seekers living in Australia for less than 5 years

Do I need a referral?

No. Dental services are available to all eligible people in the community.

Is there a waiting list?

Yes, due to the high demand for our services we have established waiting lists for routine care for adults above 18 years. For children under 18 years old, there is no waiting list.

Is there priority access?

Priority access is given to:

  • Registered clients of mental health and disability services
  • Homeless people
  • Refugees
  • Asylum seekers
  • Pregnant women
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders

Do you have emergency dental care?

Call 9575 5333 to explain your problem.

If you are in serious pain, you will be seen within 24 hours. On busy days, we may need to send you to the Royal Dental Melbourne Hospital (RDHM).

For after hours emergency care, please call the Dental Hospital on 9341 1000.

What if I need dentures?

There is a waiting list for this service – we will let you know how long.

What if I can’t make my appointment?

If you can’t make your appointment please give us at least 24 hours’ notice otherwise there is a no-show fee.

Extended hours: Tuesday and Wednesday: 8.00am - 7.30pm
