Health Promotion

Our Health Promotion team works to enhance the health and wellbeing of our community by empowering people with the skills they need to live a healthy life.

We recently delivered new cooking appliances to dozens of local sporting clubs to help them provide healthier food options to our stars of the future.

We take a place-based approach to engage people in healthy behaviours, acknowledging that where people live, grow, work and play shape their quality of life.

Our Health Promotion team works across the Bayside and Glen Eira City councils in partnership with schools, early childhood services, sports clubs, public housing and other organisations.

To support our communities' health and wellbeing, we are focusing on:

Vic Health Reimagining Health grant – Kenneth Street Public Housing Estate Community Garden Project

In 2021 we recieved a Vic Health Reimagining Health grant which we planned to use to support the expansion and sustainability of the community garden at the Bluff Rd Public Housing Estate. However, in December 2021 Homes Victoria announced redevelopment of the Bluff Rd estate, so we shifted the program to another location.

Kenneth Street Estate was selected and work began on establishing and designing a community garden. Over the life of the project we will deliver gardening workshops to build resident knowledge and capacity, increase gardening skills and horticulture knowledge, increase food availability and provide a place for residents to connect socially.

Gambler's Help Community Engagement

Connect Health & Community is home to the Gambler’s Help Southern community engagement team.

Our community engagement activities draw on health promotion principles to reach communities, drive impact and achieve real outcomes through integrated partnerships with other community and health organisations.

Our community engagement officers deliver gambling awareness programs to secondary students.

We aim to address the main drivers of gambling harm in key settings with at-risk populations, raise awareness of the harms and risks of gambling, and advocate for seeking help.

Some of the activities we deliver in the community include:

  • Delivering school education gambling harm programs for years 7-12 students.
  • Delivering information sessions for the community around gambling harm.
  • Promote Gambler’s Help Services to the community.
  • Build strategic local partnerships.
We also work with CALD and other community groups to help raise awareness of gambling harm.

We work across 10 Local Government areas in the southern metropolitan region of Melbourne in various settings and communities.
