Delivering smiles and connection

Diane tries her first ever Mr Whippy ice-cream.

As our community self-isolates to help beat the spread of COVID-19, individuals have sought safe ways to connect and create a sense of normality and happiness through the limited avenues available to them.  One colourful and joyous service bringing residents in Bentleigh East together is the legendary Mr Whippy truck.

Diane has lived in Bentleigh East for more 25 years and is an active member in the community. Throughout this pandemic she has found the local Facebook group has brought individuals together and finds it an excellent way to stay connected with fellow locals.

As COVID-19 unfolded, the East Bentleigh community has turned to its online communities for assistance, support and safe opportunities to interact with their neighbours.

The 'East Bentleigh Community 3165' Facebook group has proven a godsend to many as an excellent resource for individuals to stay in touch and keep up to date with the community.

Neighbours have been able to share suggestions, find local businesses, participate in community discussions, get help and even meet meet each other safely in the supportive online space.

Another break from the isolation of every day for others, has been the delightful sound of the local Mr Whippy ice cream truck.  Its joyous tune ringing down the streets would encourage locals to emerge from their homes for a sweet treat, while meeting and interact with their neighbours, from a safe social distance.

The impromptu, brief gatherings have sparked many community discussions, enabled people to get to know their neighbours and made some lovely memories and friendships in these unusual 'covid times'.

Connect Health & Community has been part of the community for 45 years, and has adapted to changing times too by continuing to offer services even through this latest challenge.

To keep people connected to their health we have modified the way we deliver some services to ensure the support you need is still available when you need it. We are keeping staff and clients safe with greater infection control for face-to-face services and expanding other services through telephone and video counselling to ensure client support can continue.
