What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches individuals how to assist someone who is either developing a mental health problem or is in a mental health crisis until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves. Learn the signs and symptoms, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.

Mental health concerns covered include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance use problems.

 The course teaches first aid for mental health crises which include:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
  • Aggressive behaviours.

Training for Youth Mental Health Champions and Sponsors

Boss Brain students participated in MHFA – Teen Training. This course is designed for high school students in years 7-9 and 10-12. Students will learn how to provide mental health first aid to their friends.

Sponsors participated in MHFA – Youth Training. This course is designed for adults living or working with 10 to 19-year-old adolescents, such as parents, guardians, grandparents, teachers, sports coaches, youth workers, youth resource officers, Nurses and General Practitioners.
